LES-AC Organizes Intellectual Property Role in Economic Development Seminar in Abu-Dhabi

ABU DHABI-------October 16, 2011----------Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE's Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Chairman of Centre of Excellence for Applied Research and Training (CERT), the commercial arm of the Higher Colleges of Technology, the Licensing Executives Society-Arab Countries (LES-AC) organized a seminar on the " Intellectual Property Role in Economic Development " at CERT headquarters in Abu Dhabi.

The event witnessed presentations by Mr. James Malackowski, LESI president-elect who talked about Intellectual Property Auctions, Ms. Kristi Santhis, Marketing Consultant at Ocean Tomo who tackled Intellectual Property and community, and Dr. Fouad Mrad, ESCWA Technology Center director who talked about ETC activities related to Technology Transfer field in the Arab countries.

Business people, law makers, university presidents and government officials took part in the event which aimed at highlighting the role of Intellectual Property (IP) and the value it forms to public? and private companies with a special focus on what is needed to develop the IP-based economy, the opportunities, challenges and prediction for the future of IP assets management in addition to case studies regarding technology transfer, research and development in universities and scientific research centers role in building an economy based on knowledge.

HE Sheikh Al Nahyan said: "The UAE is taking action to improve its international benchmarking in IP, particularly with respect to patents. First the National Research Foundation is sponsoring a review of the

UAE's IP laws. Second, in recognition of the importance that patents play in protecting valuable IP with commercial potential, the National Research Foundation will hold a patent-filling competition for university researchers in the UAE. Financial grants will be available for winning proposals selected by a panel of independent experts. The National Research Foundation expects to award ten grants by January 2012 in the hope that knowledge produced in the UAE may lead to patented commercial products launched from this country."

HE Sheikh Al Nahyan expressed his satisfaction with the work of the seminar due to its importance in economic development.

Meanwhile, HE Dr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, LES-AC president said:"Intellectual Property is a power tool for economic growth and economic development and IP assets in business transactions are the most valuable assets."

"The development of licensing laws and policies will encourage licensing and technology transfer at the same time capacity building programs and training on licensing are essential in order for us to match the licensor’s capacity," adding that "the ‘Arab Certified IP Licensing Practitioner’ program was developed by us for the purposes of capacity building."

HE Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh called on IP licensing and technology transfer professionals from universities, governmental institutions, law firms, and industrial companies from different Arab countries to join LES-AC network; in order to contribute and interact.

He also announced that under the patronage of HH Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, the second annual conference, "The Licensing Opportunities Forum 2011", will be held in cooperation with the Arab Science and Technology Foundation in Sharjah November 28 – 29, 2011.
HE Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh expressed his gratitude to "The Higher College of Technology", under the management of Dr. Tayyeb Kamali.

At the end of the opening session, HE Dr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh presented HE Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan with LES-AC Shield as HE Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh received from His Highness the Shield of the Higher Colleges of Technology.
