Ford Allows Automakers to Use Its Test Driving Technology

Ford is now licensing its robotic test driving technology to other automakers. Ford worked closely with Autonomous Solutions (ASI) to further develop ASI's software and components designed to enable the autonomous testing of vehicles. The automaker said it granted a patent license to ASI, giving the company the rights to incorporate Ford's bell crank actuators in the systems ASI sells to other automakers and suppliers. The technology allows robotically driven vehicles to conduct tests on harsh surfaces, such as broken concrete and metal grates, says Ford. "This robotic testing kit is available to purchase directly from ASI immediately. Several automotive OEMs have already placed orders to purchase systems for their own testing," says Chris Danowski, director of technology at Ford Global Technologies.
