DOHA-------April 2015-------The Intellectual Property and Innovation Workshop held under patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Ahmed bin Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani, Minister of Economy and Commerce, and HE Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Secretary General of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf concluded its activities in the Qatari capital, Doha. "

Held under the title "Innovation Industry and Development," the workshop was organized by the Ministry of Economy and Commerce in cooperation with the Patent Office of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf affiliated with the Secretariat General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the Licensing Executives Society - Arab Countries.

His Excellency Sheikh Ahmed bin Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani said in his opening speech: “The celebration of the World Intellectual Property Day aims to promote public understanding of Intellectual Property”, citing the growing interest in scientific research throughout the 20th Century and the beginning of the 21st Century, where this sector has become the backbone of economic and social development.

His Excellency explained that investment in this area is an indication by which communities can be compared with each other and that it contributes to a large proportion to growth, pointing out that from this point a necessity to enhance the efforts to support scientific research and protection of Intellectual Property in the Arab Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region has arisen.

His Excellency pointed out that in the light of the successive modern economic and technical developments in the State of Qatar, aimed to achieve its national vision for 2030, the Ministry of Economy and Commerce has developed and set the plans and programs necessary to contribute to achieving this vision, stressing that Intellectual Property is among the priorities of the Ministry's action, especially with the boom taking place in the field of invention and innovation in the state and the Arab world, and the various initiatives launched by the State of Qatar to promote invention and innovation, and also to provide direct support for scientific research through major projects such as Qatar Science and Technology Park, pointing out that all of this will undoubtedly contribute to building a knowledge-based economy.

HE Sheikh Ahmed bin Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani and HE Dr. Abdul Latif bin Rashid Al Zayani have opened a protection system entitled “portal of patent applicants in the Patent Office of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf.

The Workshop included an exhibition where nine models by Qatari inventors from the State of Qatar and the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf were showcased and toured by the Minister. It is noteworthy that the Intellectual Property and Innovation Workshop came within the framework of Qatar’s celebration of the World Intellectual Property Day this year, which is celebrated by all countries of the world on the 26th day of April of each year since 2000 with a view to disseminating the culture of intellectual property and awareness through various events relating to the protection of property rights.
